Walter William Skeat (philologist)

Walter William Skeat (born November 21, 1835 in London , † October 6, 1912 in Cambridge ) was a British philologist , English linguist and etymologist .

Life

He is considered an important researcher of the roots of the English language. Walter W. Skeat wrote The Principles of English Etymology (basics of English Etymology ) and 1882 Etymological English Dictionary (Etymological English dictionary is the first of its kind). Skeat laid the foundations for a revival of preoccupation with early English literature. He was editor of Piers Plowman (1867) and The Complete Works of Geoffrey Chaucer (1894-1897). Influenced by Skeat's research as a pioneer of the etymology of the English language were about the lexicographer James Murray , the lexicographer and Anglist Charles Talbut Onions and the British lexicographer Eric Partridge (1894-1979).

In its founding year 1902, he became a member ( Fellow ) of the British Academy .
