Mor Philoxenos Mattias Nayis (born January 24, 1977 in Stockholm ) is the current (as of 12/2018) Bishop of the Archdiocese of the Syrian Orthodox Church for Germany, based in the Syrian Orthodox St. Jakob von Sarug Monastery in Warburg . Life

Even as a child, Mattias showed a great interest in religion, the church and the stories told by the elders. Religious schools with regular classes were not yet established at that time. When, at the age of twelve, he heard from the parish priest about a seminary in the Mor Gabriel Monastery in Turabdin ( Turkey ), he wanted to study there. He found out about the seminary in Damascus three years later , but was not able to obtain permission from his parents to study there until he was 17. The originally planned period of six months turned into 19 years - from then on Mattias dedicated himself to monastic life.

After completing his four-year degree in 1996, he changed from student to teacher and taught at the Mor Ephrem seminary, which officially opened in the new premises in Ma'aret Sayyidnaya near Damascus that same year . He was ordained a monk on May 17, 1998 and ordained a priest two years later, on February 20, 2000. In September of the same year, he was appointed deputy head of the seminary and was honored with the Holy Cross. From 2004 to 2007 he held the position of director of the seminary, in 2006 a several month study of theology at Ridley Hall College in Cambridge was inserted.

With the episcopal ordination on January 7, 2007 Nayis was the Patriarch Mor I. Ignatius Zakka Iwas in the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral Saidnaya , Syria, the bishop ordained and appointed appointed assistant to the patriarch. From then on, he worked on behalf of the Patriarch worldwide on tasks and obligations relating to the Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch . He attended Parliament in London and Wales with seven bishops, is a representative of the Syrian Orthodox Church on the joint committee with the Coptic Orthodox and Armenian Orthodox Churches and has been chairman of the higher education institutions in the Middle East since 2010.

The youth association SOKAD-Jugend was founded by Mor Philoxenus Mattias Nayis on March 2nd, 2013 as part of a nationwide youth conference . The aim is to promote the exchange between children, adolescents and adults and to “reinforce and consolidate a long-term and sustainable bond between young people and the Church”. With the SOKAD youth, "primarily Christian spirituality and church-related religiosity" should be associated. Several times a year there are events such as the "Convention Day", series of lectures, trips and family celebrations, which are discussed and determined by the representatives of the association in a committee.
