Phoenix Fire Assurance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Phoenix Fire Assurance (also: Phoenix Fire Office ) was a British insurance company .

history

It was founded on January 3, 1782 on the initiative of sugar manufacturers in London and soon expanded abroad. In 1786 the first German agency was founded in Hamburg under the name "Phoenix Assecuranz-Societät". Shortly thereafter, further branches in almost all of Germany followed. The company was considered a pioneer in the development of fire insurance in Germany and took on numerous major risks. Phoenix was one of the group of foreign insurers that covered part of the damage after the Hamburg fire in 1842.

From the end of the 18th century, the company expanded its insurance activities from the core business of fire insurance to other areas such as credit and liability insurance as well as life and annuity insurance, and from 1786 traded under the name “Phoenix Assurance”. This was followed by the establishment of branches and subsidiaries in what was then the British Empire .

In 1984 Phoenix Assurance was taken over by what was then Sun Alliance & London (since 2008: RSA Insurance Group ). The naming rights and portfolios partially remained with former Phoenix subsidiaries. The life and annuity insurance contracts of the former Phoenix Assurance Ltd. were sold in 2005 to Resolution plc , which was later taken over by the Pearl Group. The Pearl Group has been operating since 2010, Phoenix Group and is under the name of Phoenix Life one of the largest life and pensions provider in the UK.
