history

The beginnings of the company go back to 1857 under the name The Pearl Loan Company . In 1914 it was renamed The Pearl Assurance Company and from then on worked in the insurance sector. From 1990 onwards there were numerous takeovers of British life insurers, some financed by investment firms, which were combined in the Pearl Assurance Company .

In 2008 Resolution plc was taken over, which was created in September 2005 through the merger of Resolution Life Group Ltd and Britannic Group plc . With this, the Pearl Group also took over the activities of the former Phoenix Fire Assurance . In 2009, Liberty Acquisition Holdings , an investment vehicle led by Nicolas Berggruen , bought the Pearl Group in a reverse takeover and renamed itself the Pearl Group . The company has been operating under the name Phoenix Group Holdings since March 2010 and operates as a life insurer mainly in the UK insurance market.

In 2019, Phoenix took over Swiss Re's British subsidiary ReAssure.
