Pho Thisarath I. (Phothisarat, Photisarat, also Potisarasa Kumane; full throne name Somdet Brhat-Anya Budhisara Maha Dharmikadasa Lankanakuna Maharaja Adipati Chakrapati Bhumina Narindra Raja Sri Sadhana Kanayudha ; * 1505 in Sawa (today Luang Phrabang ); † (before August 8th); ) 1548 in Vieng Chan ) was king of Lan Chang between 1520 and 1548 .

Pho Thisarath I was the only son of King Visunharat (ruled 1500–1520). He received his training at Wat Visun Maha Viharn in Sawa. After the death of his father, he was his successor and was crowned in Luang Phrabang in 1522. In 1523 he convened a Buddhist council to revise and purify the Tripitaka . He spent some time in the temple between 1525 and 1526 as a Buddhist monk. In 1533 he moved the capital from Lan Chang to Vieng Chan, today's Vientiane, where he built a magnificent capital, but without giving up Luang Phrabang as the official capital.

In 1540, King Chairacha of Ayutthaya tried to conquer Lan Chang, was also able to take Moung, but he was repulsed at the Battle of Sarakham when crossing the Mekong . Pho Thisarath later became a zealous Buddhist who made religion the state religion and erased and destroyed all remnants of traditional beliefs across the country. In Luang Phrabang he had Wat Sri Suvarna Devalaksana built on the ruins of the Lak Mueang of Luang Phrabang.

Pho Thisarath I died before August 8, 1548, seven days after an accident with an elephant in Vientiane. He left four sons and four daughters:

  1. Chaofa Chaya Setha Varman ( Sai Setthathirath I ), who succeeded him to the throne

  3. Chaofa Dharuva (Tharua)
  4. Chaofa Brhat Asena (Phya Asena), who was Voravongse I king of Lan Chang between 1575 and 1579 .

  2. Chaofa Nying Taen Kam Lao
  3. Chaofa Nying Kamagayi (Kham Khai)
  4. Chaofa Nying Dharmagayi (Tham Khai): was regent for the son of her husband Brhat Varapitra (Vorapita), King Voravongse II , between 1596 and 1602 .
