Voravongse II. (Also Vorouvongsa, Voruvongse, full throne name Somdet Brhat-Anya Chao Vara Varman Dharmika Raja Jaya Sri Sadhana Kamayudha ; * 1585 , † 1622 in Luang Phrabang ) was king of the Laotian kingdom of Lan Xang between 1596 and 1621 .

Life

Voravongse II was a son of Brhat Vorapita and was temporarily under the reign of his wife Dharmagayi , a daughter of King Pho Thisarath I (ruled 1529-1548). First he was appointed Somdet Brhat-Anya Chao Maha Uparat (a kind of viceroy). After the death of his cousin No Keo Kuman in 1596, he was proclaimed the new king by the nobles. At first he was under the rule of his father, but was captured by rebels and proclaimed king in 1599. In 1600 he moved his official residence to Mueang Kun, outside of Luang Phrabang. After reuniting with his family, the father resigned from the reign, and Voravongse was crowned Vara Varman Dharmika Raja Jaya in 1603 . He declared Lan Xang's independence from the Burmese.

Voravongse married several times, including Nang Kaen (1596), a former mistress of his father. In 1621 he was ousted from the throne by his son Upayuvaraja I and murdered in 1622.

Voravongse II had five sons, including Somdet Brhat Chao Maha Upayavaraja , who ruled Lan Xang for nine months since 1621.
