Photodimerization

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In organic chemistry, photodimerization is a chemical reaction that takes place under the influence of light , in which a new cyclic compound is formed from two unsaturated compounds . The stereoselective formation of trans -Tricyclo [5.3.0.0 2,6 ] decane by photochemical dimerization of cyclopentene is a simple example of such a reaction:

Photodimerization of cyclopentene

The reaction proceeds with a 55% yield.

Photodimerization is one of the photochemical [2 + 2] cycloadditions. According to the Woodward-Hoffmann rules , the reaction is suprafacial .
