The Photonics is a German-language journal for optical technologies . It goes back to one of the world's first laser specialist magazines, LASER (not to be confused with the magazine that was later founded by mi-verlag and is now published by b-quadrat.)

history

Photonics goes back to the first German-language laser specialist magazine LASER with its first edition in March 1969. It was first published by the Swiss publisher Aargauer Tagblatt AG with four issues a year. The editor-in-chief was Hans K. Koebner, who lives in Munich. It was founded as an organ for news about all possible uses of laser technology, as a source of information with specialist articles and as a forum for applied research.

As early as 1970, the German publishing representative Werner Pagé founded a sister company in Stuttgart , AT-Fachverlag GmbH, which took over the publication of the lasers . From 1998 onwards, following a merger of the Swiss parent publisher with another newspaper publisher, the ways of the publishing marriage between the Swiss newspaper and the German specialist magazine publisher parted. AT-Fachverlag GmbH has been a company of Holzmann Medien GmbH & Co KG in Bad Wörishofen since 2012 .

The magazine has since been renamed several times to Laser + Elektro-Optik (1972–1981), Laser and Optoelectronics (1982–1998) and LaserOpto (1999–2001). Uwe Brinkmann took over the editor-in-chief as the successor to Köbner and later she was given a more industrially oriented sister magazine Photonik as an index magazine . In 2002 both were merged under the name of photonics and focused on the expanded field of optical technologies. Johannes Kuppe became editor-in-chief, afterwards Sylvia Kuschke headed the editorial department of the trade journal until December 2017, before Matthias Laasch took over the position of editor-in-chief in January 2018.

The English-language Photonik International has been published since 2006 with selected specialist articles from the German-language edition. An additional edition of BioPhotonics has been published since 2008 with an edition of 10,000 copies. Since June 2002, photonics has included the regular supplement nanotechnology , the first publication on this topic in the German-speaking area.
