Under photopsia ( Greek ) refers to the perception of light phenomena such as lightning, sparks or fibrillation without a corresponding correlate in the outside world. These perceptions can be triggered, for example, by retinal detachment or a vitreous detachment . Photopsias can also occur in connection with migraines or epileptic seizures involving the occipital or temporal lobe . An almost classic form of photopsia is the “seeing asterisk”, for example with a punch on the eye ( contusio bulbi ) or a blow on the skull ( traumatic brain injury ).
