Phyllonorycter quercifoliella is a butterfly from the family of moths (Gracillariidae).
features
The moths are small butterflies and have a wingspan of 7–9 mm. The front wings of the moth have a white-brown striped pattern. The white stripes have a gray border on one side. A characteristic longitudinal band runs from the base in the middle over more than half the length of the wing.
distribution
Phyllonorycter quercifoliella occurs in the western Palearctic . The species is widespread in Europe. It is only missing on several Mediterranean islands. The species is also represented in North Africa and the Middle East .
Way of life
Phyllonorycter quercifoliella forms two generations per year. The moths are usually observed in April and May and in late summer in the months of August and September. Host plants of the moth species are various oaks ( Quercus ), including the common oak ( Quercus robur ) and the sessile oak ( Quercus petraea ). The caterpillars develop in a mine on the underside of the leaves of their host plants. The silvery-white shiny lead is oval-shaped and about 12 mm long. The caterpillar pupates in the mine. The species overwinters as a pupa.
