Ashoknagar is a city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh . The city is located in the north of the state and is close to the geographic center of India. It is part of the Bundelkhand region .

The city is the administrative center of the Ashoknagar district of the same name . Ashoknagar has municipal council status . The city is divided into 22 wards (constituencies).

history

The city is named after the ruler Ashoka , who is said to have stayed here for one night while trying to conquer Ujjain .

Demographics

The city's population is 81,828 according to the 2011 census. Ashoknagar has a gender ratio of 914 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The literacy rate was 76.89%. Almost 82% of the population are Hindus , approx. 9% are Jainas , approx. 8% are Muslims and approx. 1% belong to another or no religion. 14.4% of the population are children under 6 years of age.

Infrastructure

Ashoknagar has road and rail links with major cities in the state and the country. Ashoknagar Station is the part of the Koda-Bina railway line of the West Central Railway Division of Indian Railways .
