features

Left-handed shell of the pointed bladder snail

The case is eight to 12 mm high and five to seven mm wide. The left-hand winding case has six whorls, the apex is pointed. The thin but firm shell is yellowish horn-colored. The right-hand mantle extension engages over the housing. Pointed bladder snails are hermaphrodites .

Habitat and Distribution

The apex bladder snail colonizes flowing and still waters, it does not place any special demands on the water quality. Their natural habitat is southern Europe and Africa. It was introduced to North America, probably through the aquatic plant trade. It is the most common freshwater snail in many regions of Spain .

Due to exposure, it is also widespread in Germany. Physella acuta is an indicator organism for water quality class III, heavily polluted.
