The Pico Mogotón , also Cerro Mogotón , is a 2107 m high, inactive volcano in the Central American state of Nicaragua . It is located in the Cordellia Isabelia mountain range on the border with the neighboring state of Honduras . With its height, the mountain forms the highest point in Nicaragua. The ascent of the Mogotón is difficult because the hiking path is not exactly or not at all signposted and is located in a densely overgrown hybrid forest . There is also a minimal residual risk from mines. The mountains and forests along the border of Honduras and Nicaragua were mined by the Sandinista in the 1980s . However, the military has evacuated large parts, especially near the summit and the coffee plantations. What remained are individual strips of yellow warning tape and signs.
