Pierino da Vinci

Pierino da Vinci (* approx. 1529 ; † January 1553 in Pisa ) was an Italian sculptor of the Cinquecento .

Pierino da Vinci, nephew of the painter and polymath Leonardo da Vinci , studied with the sculptor Niccolò Tribolo until 1546/47 and was then brought to Pisa by Luca Martini , a scholar and member of the Florentine Academy. There he spent the rest of his short life and, despite his young age, created some outstanding works in marble such as a young river god or a group with Samson and a Philistine. He also made the allegorical figure of "Dovizia" (Abundance) on a column in the market square of Pisa on behalf of Grand Duke Cosimo I de 'Medici . In 1553 he died of malaria .
