Pierre-Jakez Hélias (born 1914 ; died 1995 ) was a French journalist, writer, poet, folklorist and collector of Breton fairy tales, who was also engaged in theater and radio in Breton and French

Hélias wrote in Breton and is best known for his book Le cheval d'orgueil: mémoires d'un Breton du pays bigouden (The horse of pride; 1975), which, like his and Le quêteur de mémoire. Quarante ans de recherche sur les mythes et la civilization bretonne (1990) Terre humaine , a series of books founded and edited by Jean Malaurie , was published. Hélias was also the editor of a Breton-French, French-Breton dictionary (1986). His bestselling Le cheval d'orgueil was by Claude Chabrol , entitled Traumpferd filmed (1980) and it has been translated into many languages. Many of his books were published by the art publisher Jos Le Doaré in Châteaulin (in Breton, Kastellin). Some of his books have also been translated into German.

The horse of pride

"Le Cheval d'orgueil" describes the hard life of a poor farming family shortly after the First World War. The last part of this work entitled "New Testament" was the occasion for a sharp polemic by Xavier Grall (see below). He accused Hélias of designing a picture of Brittany that was too nostalgic and wrote an alternative under the title "Le Cheval couché" (The Sleeping Horse) “
