Xavier Grall

Xavier Grall (born June 22, 1930 in Landivisiau , † December 11, 1981 in Quimperlé ) was a French journalist , poet and writer .

Grall grew up in Brittany and enjoyed a strict Catholic upbringing. He spent many years in the Catholic Kreizker -Internat of Saint-Pol-de-Léon . As a conscript he was stationed in Morocco . He experienced the Algerian war as a soldier at the front, which has had a lasting impact on his image of the French fatherland. The loss of respect for France as a Grande Nation was compensated for by a return to its Breton roots. After the war, Grall worked as a journalist in Paris and was intensely involved - also and especially in his role as a writer - for the Breton separatists who were striving for secession . Grall succumbed to emphysema at the age of fifty , which had plagued him throughout his adult life.

Xavier Grall's literary work was decisively shaped by his experiences in the Algerian war . The permanently destroyed image of the French nation and the rediscovery of his Breton identity are reflected in his texts and led to the support of the Breton autonomy movement. The mystical transfiguration of Brittany is an essential feature of his work. Well-known songwriters such as Dan Ar Braz still intone Grall's poems today. He wrote militantly and not very modestly about his homeland, which was to redefine and position itself in the tradition of the Celtic heritage. On the other hand, the works that were created shortly before his death strike a softer note; they lack any polemics .
