Marguerite Donlon

Marguerite Donlon (born May 31, 1966 in County Longford , Ireland ) is an Irish dancer , choreographer and ballet director.

Career

After having come into contact with traditional Irish dance in her childhood, Marguerite Donlon took up private ballet training at the advanced age of 16 with the South African dancer Anica Dawson, who moved to Ireland in the late 1970s and later in Legan established the Shawbrook School of Dance.

In 1983 Marguerite Donlon moved to the Dorothy Stevens Ballet & Theater School in Halifax (West Yorkshire) , at the same time she completed her secondary school education with A-Levels in Bradford . In 1986 she moved to London, where she took part in morning training and rehearsals for the London Festival Ballet (then directed by Peter Schaufuss ) and earned her living as a dresser at performances by the same company. In 1988 she received a contract as a dancer at the London Festival Ballet, which was renamed the English National Ballet in 1989. She quickly took over solo roles, a. a. Effie in August Bournonville's La Sylphide or Desdemona in José Limón's The Moor's Pavane and had formative encounters a. a. with Natalia Makarova and Rudolf Nurejew . When Peter Schaufuss became artistic director of the ballet of the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 1990 , she followed him as a soloist to this company, where she danced a. a. in choreographies by Maurice Béjart , William Forsythe , John Neumeier , Bill T. Jones, Meg Stuart and Jiří Kylián . She has toured around the globe with the two companies mentioned. a. to the Metropolitan Opera House in New York and the Kirov Theater in Leningrad (now the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg).

Independent work

The first own choreographies were created in the early 1990s. a. for the ballet of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Komische Oper Berlin . In 2000 Marguerite Donlon left the ballet of the Deutsche Oper Berlin to work as a freelance choreographer. A year later she was appointed ballet director and choreographer at the Saarland State Theater in Saarbrücken. Her activity at this theater ended with the end of the 2012/13 season; In 2014 she presented a piece as a guest choreographer at the Saarland State Theater.

In addition, Marguerite Donlon has created choreographies for numerous ballet companies around the world or rehearsed existing pieces, e.g. for the ballet of the Vienna State Opera (2000), the Nederlands Dans Theater II (2002), the Stuttgart Ballet (2002) of the Hubbard Street Dance Company Chicago (2001 and 2005) and the Companhia Nacional de Bailado in Lisbon (2009). In addition to Europe, her work has also been shown in the USA, Canada and Korea.

Teaching

Marguerite Donlon is a lecturer at the dance department of the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts . She has also appeared as a juror in renowned competitions such as the international choreography competition "no ballet" in Ludwigshafen (2007) or the international competition for Choreographers in Hanover (2006, 2009 and 2013).

Personal

Marguerite Donlon was married to the saxophonist and composer Claas Willeke (1966–2013). The couple has a daughter, Kíla Amelie (* 2007).

Awards

  • 2007: Marguerite Donlon was nominated for the "Prix Benois de la Danse" for her choreography "Giselle: Reloaded" in spring.
  • 2007: In September she received a nomination for the German Theater Prize "DER FAUST" in the category "Best Choreography" for "Romeo and Juliet "
  • 2007: On October 9th, she was awarded the Saarland Order of Merit by the Prime Minister of Saarland Peter Müller .
