Natalija Romanovna Makarowa ( Russian: Наталия Романовна Макарова ; born October 21, 1940 in Leningrad ) is a world-famous Russian ballet dancer .

Life

Makarowa received her dance training at the Waganowa Ballet Academy . From 1959 to 1970 she was part of the Kirov Ballet ensemble . In 1969 she was named an Honored Artist of the RSFSR .

In 1970, she did not return to the Soviet Union back, but asked during a guest performance of their Company in London for political asylum . In western countries she danced at the American Ballet Theater in New York and at the Royal Ballet in London . Makarowa was best known for her appearances in great ballet classics such as Giselle or Swan Lake . In 1980 the performance of La Bayadère , which she directed, was celebrated. Makarova made her Broadway debut in 1983 with the resumption of the musical On Your Toes , which earned her the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical . She received the 1985 Laurence Olivier Award for her performance of On Your Toes on British stages .

In 1989 Makarova returned to Leningrad and finished her career with the Kirov Ballet at the age of 50.

In 2012 she received the Kennedy Prize for Lifetime Achievement as part of the annual Kennedy Center Awards .
