Pierre Decourcelle

Pierre Decourcelle (born January 25, 1856 in Paris , † October 10, 1926 there ) was a French writer.

After graduating from the Lycée Henri IV , Decourcelle initially worked as a businessman and stockbroker before turning to literature , like his father Adrien Decourcelle and his uncle Adolphe d'Ennery .

His piece Le Grain de beauté was premiered at the Théâtre du Gymnase as early as 1880 . Commissioned by Sarah Bernhardt , he wrote the drama L'As de trèfle for the Théâtre de l'Ambigu-Comique in 1882 . He also worked under the pseudonyms Choufleuri and Valentin as a journalist for the magazine Gaulois .

A number of comedies, opera librettos and adaptations of novels for the stage have emerged since the 1880s . He has also written short stories and popular novels as well as screenplays for the film. Les deux gosses , initially written as a drama and published in 1890 as a novel, was made into a film five times alone: ​​1912 by Adrien Caillard , 1923 by Maurice Tourneur (under the title Jealous Husbands ), 1924 by Louis Mercanton , 1936 by Fernand Rivers , 1942 by Alfonso Patiño Gómez ( Los dos pilletes ) and 1951 by Flavio Calzavara ( I due derelitti ).

In 1907 Decourcelle arranged a play by William Gilette after Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes (in which Charles Chaplin had his first important stage appearance in 1903 ) for the French stage. In 1908 he was one of the founding members of the Société cinématographique des auteurs et gens de lettres (SCAGL), which produced films based on classic literary works. 1912-13 he was their artistic director.
