Pierre Kaelin

Abbé Pierre Kaelin (born May 12, 1913 in Estavayer-le-Lac ; died June 1, 1995 in Villars-sur-Glâne ) was a Swiss priest , composer and choirmaster whose main field of activity was in Friborg in Üechtland . His hometowns were Einsiedeln and Freiburg.

Life

Pierre Kaelin was born in Estavayer-le-Lac in 1913 as the son of Sophie (nee Rody) and the notary Joseph Kaelin. Between 1928 and 1931 he attended the college of Sankt Michael in Freiburg and in 1933 passed the federal Matura at the collegiate school in Einsiedeln . He then attended the diocesan seminary in Freiburg and was ordained a priest in 1937. This was followed by a visit to the École César-Franck and the Institut grégorien de Paris , where he received higher music education. Between 1949 and 1977 he worked as a teacher at the diocesan and teacher training college in Friborg , and from 1955 also at the Freiburg Conservatory . Between 1949 and 1983 he was the successor of Abbé Joseph Bovet as Kapellmeister of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas . He also gave courses for prospective conductors at home and abroad.

Kaelin's catalog of works, compiled by the Friborg Cantonal and University Library in 1993, lists 1061 works. Choral compositions make up the vast majority of his works; they were partly profane and partly sacred. Pierre Kaelin's musical legacy is in the Friborg Cantonal and University Library.

In 1952 Kaelin founded the later world-famous choir “La chanson de Friborg”.

Kaelin developed a device himself that enabled him to synchronize and call up multiple playback tracks. This invention, which was based in part on the telephone technology of the time, he called le Tékaphone .
