The Pierre Levée in Poitiers

The Pierre Levée (German: The raised rock ) in Poitiers , France , is a Neolithic megalithic complex and a prehistoric cultural monument. It stands on a square in the middle of the city, on the Rue du Dolmen and the Rue de la Pierre Levée, where the Roman road from Lemonum (ancient Poitiers) to Avaricum (Bourges) and Lugdunum (Lyon) once ran. In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

The dolmen is already mentioned in various medieval documents with different Latinized names: Petra-Levata (1299), Petra-Soupeaze (1302), Petra-Suspensa (1322). A map from 1302 also indicates the location: super dubiam = above the dunes (a district of Poitiers).

The dolmen has been on the list of French historical monuments since 1862 and the area around it since 1943 .
