Pierre Monichon (born October 24, 1925 in Lyon , † September 1, 2006 in Paris ) was a French music teacher and scholar and inventor of the harmonéon , a concert accordion.

Monichon studied harmony with Yves Margat at the École César-Franck , music analysis with Guy de Lioncourt , counterpoint and fugue with René Alix and Albert Bertelin , music history with Michel Garcin and music history with Norbert Dufourcq .

He owned a collection of punch reed instruments , researched their history and wrote several books on them, including the basic Petite Histoire de l'Accordéon (1958). In 1945 he founded the accordion ensemble Les 12 Organola .

In an effort to develop an instrument of equal value to classical solo instruments, he invented the harmonéon in 1948 . This is a chromatic accordion with a button-operated keyboard on the treble side with an identical construction and function on the bass side. Alain Abbott played his first concerts on this instrument as early as 1959 , which was officially recognized by the French Ministry of Culture in 1974.

In 1971 Monichon founded an accordion class at the Aubervilliers Conservatory and taught music history in Château-Thierry. In 1982 he was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres . In the following year he served as president of the jury of the Conservatoire de Paris . His students included u. a. Charles Taupin , Monique Lecoq , Lucien Deloirs , Jacky Gilbert and Daniel Tessedou .

Monichon died on September 1, 2006 at the age of 80.
