Pierre Petit (engineer)
Pierre Petit (* 1598 in Montluçon ; † August 20, 1677 in Lagny-sur-Marne ) was a French astronomer, physicist, mathematician and instrument maker.
Petit was initially employed in his father's office (Contrôleur en l'élection) in Montluçon, but went to Paris in 1633 to devote himself to science. He was a member of the circle around Marin Mersenne and known with Étienne Pascal and Blaise Pascal as well as René Descartes .
He was later a member of the Montmor Academy . In 1667 he was elected a member ( Fellow ) of the Royal Society at the suggestion of Henry Oldenburg .
Among other things, he was a military engineer and geographer in the service of Louis XIII. and Louis XIV, for example as general manager for fortifications.
