Pierre Salama

Pierre Salama (born January 2, 1917 in Algiers , † April 2, 2009 in Paris ) was a French classical archaeologist and epigraphist .

Life

Pierre Salama attended the Grand Lycée in Algiers, where the archaeologists and philologists Jacques Heurgon and Louis Leschi as well as the geographer Jean Despois shaped him. He then studied archeology and law at the University of Algiers .

During the Second World War Salama fought in France (1940), Tunisia (1942–1943), Italy (1943–1944) and Alsace (1944–1945). For his combat service he was accepted into the Legion of Honor .

After his release he graduated in 1947. In 1952 he was employed as a lecturer in North African history at the Institute of Political Science at the University of Algiers . In addition, from 1956 he worked at the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) on a project on ancient military history. For his work he received the Prix Thorlet of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres .

When Algeria proclaimed its independence from France in 1962, Salama decided to stay in the country. He also represented history and law at the university. In the course of the Arabization of the education system, he stopped his lectures in 1984 and emigrated to France in 1989. He spent his old age in Paris.

Salama dealt primarily with the history of Roman North Africa. He presented numerous studies on topography as well as economic and military history, evaluating numismatic and inscribed sources. Most recently he worked on a partial volume for the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum (CIL), which gathers the milestones of North Africa.
