Pietà in Ensisheim

The sculpture Pietà in the church of St-Martin in Ensisheim , a French commune in the Haut-Rhin department of the Grand Est region , was created at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1989 the Pietà was classified as a Monument historique .

The colored and gilded wooden Pietà shows Mary on her knees with the narrow body of Jesus . Maria is bent forward slightly, she is wearing a long, loose dress with many folds. A cloth is wrapped tightly around the body of Jesus.

The sculpture has undergone several restorations, at the beginning of the 20th century the three hands of Joseph Saur were renewed.
