Pietà in Erwitte

The sculpture of Pietà in the Catholic parish church of St. Laurentius in Erwitte , a town in the Soest district in North Rhine-Westphalia , was created by Heinrich Gröninger from Paderborn in the first half of the 17th century . It stands on the south wall of the tower yoke.

Originally the sculpture was used as an altarpiece . It was donated by the canon Johann von Landsberg, a member of the clergy of St. Martini in Minden .

The seven swords arranged radially around the head of Mary symbolize the painful events in the life of the Blessed Mother . They direct the viewer's gaze to the painful face of the mother of Jesus. The frame bears a text from the Lamentations of Jeremiah :

"O all of you who walk the path for now, notice and see whether there is also a pain like my pain."

On the pedestal, the founder "Johannes von Landtsbergh" is remembered in Latin .
