Heinrich Groeninger
Heinrich Gröninger (* around 1578/79 in Paderborn ; † November 6, 1631 ) was a German sculptor . Due to his activity as a cathedral sculptor in Paderborn, some of his works can be seen in the cathedral there .
Life
Heinrich Gröninger is the eldest son of Gerdt van Groningen, who acquired the citizenship of the city of Paderborn in 1578 , and Engel Harbring (also spelled "Harbrink"). The parental home is occupied at Gierstor in Paderborn. His brother Gerhard (around 1582–1652) and his sister Maria († before 1626) are known as other siblings . Presumably Hans Groninger was also a brother. The exact date of Gröninger's birth is not known, but it is assumed to be 1578/79.
It is not clear where Gröninger learned to be a sculptor. His first work is a grave slab of landdrosten Raban von Westphal from Dringenberg , which his widow commissioned shortly after his death in 1598. Here Gröninger appeared as a freelance sculptor and entrepreneur. Another testimony about him can be found in the membership directory of the Marian Sodality of the Paderborn Jesuits , which Gröninger joined on January 23, 1600.
It is not known where Gröninger maintained his house and workshop until 1610. On April 23, 1610, Gröninger rented a house north of the cathedral, which had previously housed the Martinskuria of the Paderborn Jesuits. In the lease, Gröninger's wife Maria Wegewarth from Münster is mentioned for the first time.
On April 13, 1612, Gröninger was appointed cathedral sculptor by the Paderborn cathedral chapter . During this time, several tombs were created in the cloister of Paderborn Cathedral and the large tomb of Dietrich von Fürstenberg . Thanks to the employment, Gröninger was financially well off and on April 13, 1617 acquired the Detmarsenhof in Neuhaus for 300 thalers.
By the end of the 1620s, Gröninger's financial situation must have worsened, so that in 1627 and 1629 he took out loans and sold his parents' house in Giersstrasse. At this time his wife was already dead and Gröninger continued to live in Neuhaus with his only son Johann. Until his death on November 6th 1631, Gröninger continued the workshop operation.
