Gerhard Groeninger
Gerhard Gröninger (* 1582 in Paderborn , † 1652 in Münster ) was a German architect and sculptor. He worked mainly in Westphalia and the Netherlands . With his works, the early Baroque made a breakthrough in Westphalia.
Life
After training with his brother Heinrich Gröninger and years of traveling in the Netherlands, Gerhard Gröninger became a citizen of Münster in 1609 . Here he worked in the workshop of the sculptor Hans Lacke . In 1621 Gröninger became Gildemeister. His oeuvre consists almost exclusively of works for churches in the diocese of Münster ; his style was shaped by the Dutch mannerism taught in Antwerp . The clear architectural structure of his work also reveals the knowledge of the Italian Renaissance , as it was spread through the Dutch engravings. The figurative is based on engravings by Cornelis Cort and Philipp Galle and the graphic work of Albrecht Dürer . The balance and harmonious lines increase until 1635 and is considered to be his most important creative period. Despite the large orders, it went bankrupt in 1636. In addition, the situation in Münster was tense and unbridgeable due to his quick temper. In 1639 he moved to Rheine with his family . In his later years he returned to Münster. The painter and sculptor Johann Mauritz Gröninger was a grandson of Gerhard Gröninger.
