Philipp Galle

Philip Galle (* 1537 in Haarlem ; † 12 or 29. March 1612 in Antwerp ) was a Dutch artist and engraver of Mannerism . In addition, he worked as a copper engraver, publisher and writer .

Philipp Galle was a member of a Dutch family of engravers. He founded the most important workshop for copperplate engraving in Antwerp in the late 16th and 17th centuries, which was continued by his sons Cornelius and Theodor Galle . Based on models by Pieter Brueghel (e.g. 1558 The Alchemist ), Maerten van Heemskerck (e.g. The Destruction of the Temple of Solomon ), M. de Voin, Jan van der Straet and Frans Floris (e.g. Lot and his Daughters ) Galle created some of his finest copperplate engravings .
