Cornelius Galle the Elder
Cornelis Galle I (* 1576 in Antwerp ; † 29. March 1650 Antwerp) was a Dutch artist of the Baroque and the most successful member of engraver family .
Life
He was a son of Philipp Galle , brother of Theodor Galle and the father of Cornelius Galle the Elder. J. He is particularly well known for reproducing Peter Paul Rubens' pictures as copper engravings . From a trip to Rome with his brother Theodor he brought home numerous engravings after Raffael , Carracci , Titian , Guido Reni and others. He created extensive foil panels for compilations (e.g. “De symbolis heroicis”).
