Pieter van Geer (born June 27, 1841 in Leiden , † October 3, 1919 in The Hague ) was a Dutch mathematician.

Life

His parents were the former blacksmith and manufacturer Pieter van Geer (born January 19, 1808 in Leiderdorp) and Maria Catharina Cockuijt (also: Cockuyt, born February 3, 1809 in Berkel, † March 12, 1876 in Boxmeer, married October 24 1837 in Zoeterwoude). Van Geer received his elementary lessons in Leiden and enrolled on September 21, 1858 as a student of philosophy at the University of Leiden . On October 24, 1862, he received his doctorate there under Frederik Kaiser with the mathematical subject De geodetic lijnen op de ellipsoïde for a doctorate in philosophical sciences. Thereupon received a teaching position in Delft and was appointed on January 22, 1867 to the extraordinary professor of mathematics and mechanics at the University of Leiden. He took on this task on March 23, 1867 with the inaugural speech De ontwikkeling van den geest, het highest doel van de beoefening der wiskunde . On January 24, 1877, he became a full professor in the field mentioned. His lectures mainly dealt with statements on geometry and theoretical mechanics.

In addition, he also participated in the organizational tasks of the university, was brief in 1877 and in 1882/83 acting rector of the Alma Mater . He put down the last task with the speech Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica . He was also a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion . Van Geer was considered vain, which made it difficult to deal with. He is also known to love music. He was also committed to primary education and to widows and orphans of officers. On July 2, 1902, he retired for health reasons and retired on September 15, 1902. He then devoted himself to the history of mathematical science, about which he occasionally gave lectures in Leiden.
