Pikmin 2 (Japanese ピ ク ミ ンPikumin 2 ) is a game in the Pikmin series of games by the Japanese manufacturer Nintendo . The game was first released worldwide in 2004 for the Nintendo GameCube game console and in 2009 as a slightly modified new edition as part of the New Play Control! Series for Wii .

action

Hocotate Freight, the company that Captain Olimar works for, is on the verge of financial ruin as Louie, a young employee, may have eaten his entire load of golden carrots of spades. On the orders of his boss, Olimar returns with Louie to the Pikmin planet to look for valuable treasures.

In the further course of the game, the lost Louie must also be saved. From this point on, Captain Olimar receives support from the boss of Hocotate Freight, who flies back to the Pikmin planet with Captain Olimar to search for Louie.

Gameplay

The player controls one of the two characters, Captain Olimar or Louie, through a three-dimensional environment. With the help of this, he can pull Pikmin out of the earth and supervise it with the various tasks by throwing it to a desired location or directing it there with a simple command. The Pikmin are small beings that grow out of the earth like carrots. As soon as Olimar pulls a Pikmin out of the ground, it follows him at every turn and follows his instructions. Pikmin can clear obstacles out of the way, build bridges, fight opponents and carry found objects to the landing site. Some objects are essential to be able to develop new play areas. Each task requires the use of a certain type of Pikmin: each object requires a different number of Pikmin in order to be carried by them. You get additional Pikmin if you let the Pikmin bring the carcasses of defeated opponents or flower stigmas to the onion. With everything, the rule is that there can never be more than 100 Pikmin in the playing field at the same time. At the end of a day, the Pikmin must be returned to their flying dwellings, the so-called onions, in order not to fall victim to the nocturnal creatures.

There are five different types of Pikmin: red, yellow, blue, purple, and white. Each type has its own skills that the player has to use again and again during the game in order to progress. Red Pikmin are fire resistant. Yellow pikmin are immune to electricity. Blue Pikmin are able to walk through water. Purple Pikmin are ten times as strong and heavy as Pikmin of other colors, and their heavy weight can stun opponents when thrown at them. However, they are also the slowest Pikmin and have the lowest trajectory on a throw. White Pikmin are poison resistant and poisonous in their own right, so if this species of Pikmin is eaten, they will do great damage to opponents. They can also track down buried treasures. They are also the fastest type of Pikmin.

While red, yellow and blue Pikmin have their own onion and are grown there, the purple and white Pikmin, on the other hand, can only be grown in the cave systems by throwing any Pikmin into a white or purple flower.

Game world

There are several game areas in which the player can land with his spaceship. Some treasures are required so that new play areas can be opened or the leaders receive new skills (such as fire resistance or a treasure locator). There are cave entrances distributed in the individual play areas, of which there are several in each play area and have several levels. The architecture of most of the cave levels is randomly generated to a certain extent. In these caves there is also no time limit, such as the course of a day.

Challenge mode

Regardless of the main game, as in the first Pikmin, there is the opportunity to try out a challenge mode. The challenge in Challenge mode is that you have to conquer cave areas with a fixed number of Pikmin. Each level has a time limit and a key to be recovered that opens the next level or the exit. Additionally collected treasures, the remaining time and collected carcasses increase the high score again . Challenge mode can be played cooperatively in split screen with a second player who controls Louie.

Two player mode

In the actual two-player mode, which is also played via split screen, the task is to steal the other player's marble or to get a number of neutral or yellow marbles in good time. The course of the game is influenced by collecting a special treasure in the form of a cherry with random events.

New Play Control! Pikmin 2

Pikmin 2 appeared in 2009 like its predecessor in the New Play Control series! on the game console Wii again. It now supports widescreen and for the first time is also available in a PAL version of the title Progressive Scan . Pointer control is also used.

Others

Olimar is represented as a fighter in Super Smash Bros. Brawl , along with the 5 Pikmin species from Pikmin 2 . Accordingly, there is an arena in the game that is modeled on the planet of Pikmin. Furthermore, Olimar is represented in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / for Wii U as a character together with an arena that is modeled on the garden of encounters from Pikmin 3.
