Pilosocereus diersianus is a species of plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Cologne botanist and cactus specialist Lothar Diers.
description
Pilosocereus diersianus grows shrubby, branching above the base and reaches heights of up to 2 meters. The upright, green to gray-green shoots have a diameter of 5 to 9 centimeters. There are 19 to 22 ribs. The thorns are golden brown to gray brown. The ascending 10 central spines are 0.5 to 6 inches long. The 10 to 20 radial spines are spread out. The flowering part of the shoots is very distinct and is located to the side and near the tip of the shoot. The areoles there are covered with white hairs up to 3 centimeters long and up to 10 centimeters long bristles.
The strong tubular to funnel-shaped flowers are 3.5 to 5 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 3 to 3.5 centimeters. The depressed spherical fruits are 2 to 3 centimeters long, tear open at the sides and contain a magenta-colored pulp.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Pilosocereus diersianus is distributed in Brazil in the northeast of the state of Goiás at altitudes of 600 to 700 meters. The first description as Pseudopilocereus diersianus was published in 1981 by Eddie Esteves Pereira (* 1939). Pierre Josef Braun (* 1959) placed them in the genus Pilosocereus in 1988 .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
