Pilosocereus flavipulvinatus grows tree-like with a distinct trunk, is not very branched and reaches heights of 2 to 8 meters. The upright to crooked shoots , often leaning against the surrounding vegetation, are olive green, glaucous at the tip and have a diameter of 3 to 9.5 centimeters. There are 6 to 9 ribs with crooked transverse furrows. The areoles on rounded protrusions are yellowish tomentose. The translucent, ascending thorns are light yellow at first and turn gray later. Of the 3 to 5 protruding and 1.5 to 3 centimeters long central spines, the lowest is the longest. The spread out 12 to 15 radial spines are 5 to 14 millimeters long. Part of the shoots capable of flowering is not pronounced.

The funnel-shaped flowers appear on 2 to 4 ribs near the tip of the shoot. They are 5.8 to 6 inches long and 3.5 to 3.7 inches in diameter. The depressed spherical fruits have a diameter of 3 to 3.5 centimeters, tear at the sides and contain a magenta-colored pulp.
