The upright or basal upwardly curved greyish green shoots have a diameter of 6.5 to 11 centimeters. There are 13 to 15 low ribs. The initially light felted areoles are later dark gray. They are 6 to 11 millimeters apart. The 26 to 40  thorns are needle-like and piercing. The 12 to 16 protruding central spines are in two slightly different rows. The outer thorns are up to 2.1 inches long, the inner ones are stronger and up to 3.4 inches long. The up to 30 radial spines are very different in length (1.5–13 millimeters). The flowering areoles are scattered on the shoots. A tuft of light, loosely colored hair up to 2.6 centimeters long emerges from them and later turns silver-gray.
