Pilosocereus mollispinus is a species of plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet mollispinus means 'soft thorn, with soft thorn'.

description

Pilosocereus mollispinus grows shrubby with a woody trunk up to 10 centimeters in diameter, branches only up to 60 centimeters in height and reaches heights of growth of up to 2.3 meters. The dark green to grayish green shoots have a diameter of up to 8.5 centimeters. There are 13 to 16 ribs, which are slightly indented above the 7 to 12 millimeters apart areoles . The areoles bald with age. The 13 to 16 soft, flexible, non-piercing thorns are initially (light) gray and later turn dark gray. The outer thorns are up to 1.3 centimeters long, the somewhat thicker inner ones up to 2.3 centimeters long. The flowering part of the shoots is not or only weakly developed.

The narrow, funnel-shaped flowers are about 4.5 centimeters long and reach a diameter of up to 3.4 centimeters. The flower tube is green, the bracts white. The flat, spherical, green to olive-green fruits have a diameter of up to 3 centimeters and contain a white pulp. The shiny black seeds are smooth.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pilosocereus mollispinus is common on limestone rocks in the Brazilian state of Goiás . The first description was published in 2004 by Pierre Josef Braun (* 1959) and Eddie Esteves Pereira (* 1939).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
