Pinguicula casabitoana is a carnivorous plant from the genus of fatty herbs ( Pinguicula ), section Discoradix . It is closely related to Pinguicula lignicola and is considered possibly identical to it.

description

The plant is an epiphyte of tropical, heterophyllic growth. The numerous short roots are provided with oval to circular adhesive discs with a diameter of around one millimeter. It typically forms a rosette of linear-spatulate leaves with lanceolate tips, in other growth phases the leaves can also be of a different shape, so they are numerous during flowering, lanceolate to linear and in young plants flat and obovate.

Pinguicula casabitoana blooms on a stem growing from the center of the rosette with a single, zygomorphic flower that is white with a yellow throat spot. The seeds are stalked (!).

Occurrence

This species of plant is endemic to the Dominican Republic in the La Vega province . It grows there at 2000  m on very smooth, moss-free tree bark with high humidity. In total, only three locations of this plant species are known, a large one with several hundred individuals and two small ones with only a few specimens. On September 29, 1998, the hurricane "George" hit the island and destroyed all three locations, the two small ones were completely destroyed, at the large main location only ten plants remained. Although these held up, they could still be found in 2001. Nevertheless, the loss of the species is to be feared as long as no further locations are known or an acquisition of culture succeeds.
