The Pinnacle Rock (from English pinnacle , summit, tip, pinnacle ' ) is a 120 m high pillar of surf off the north coast of Elephant Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It is located 3.5 km east of Point Wild .
The descriptive name probably goes back to participants in the endurance expedition (1914-1917) of the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton , who had saved themselves after the loss of the expedition ship Endurance and long ice drift in dinghies to Elephant Island.
