action
In 2000, Gi Ha-myeong led a happy life with his parents and older brother Jae-myeong, until his father Gi Ho-sang, the captain of the fire-fighting team, died in an explosion with some of his men while attempting to rescue a factory . When Ho-sang's body is initially missing, the media raise awareness by scapegoating him. In a fight over MSC reporter's Song Cha-Ok's calculation, he claims Ho-sang survived the explosion and is currently hiding because he was responsible for the deaths of his men. This leads to the Gi family becoming outcasts and objects of national contempt in their neighborhood. Gi Ho-sang's wife kills herself and her younger son (Ha-myeong) by jumping off a cliff, and Jae-myeong blames the media, especially Cha-ok, for her death. But Ha-myeong is alive. He was rescued from the water by Choi Gong-pil, a nice older man who lives on Hyangri Island. Gong-pil, who suffers from either Alzheimer's disease or trauma-induced memory loss, believes Ha-myung is his elder son Choi Dal-po, a simple-minded man who died thirty years ago. Ha-myeong, who has no one else in the world, accepts the deception and treats Gong-pil as his father. Gong-pil officially accepts Ha-myeong, now called Dal-po, and puts him in the family register as his oldest son. Five months later, when Gong-Pil's younger son Choi Dal-pyung moves to the island with his daughter Choi In-ha, they are amazed to be asked by Gong-pil, a mere boy as their “older brother” and “uncle “To address. Choi In-ha has "Pinocchio's Syndrome" which causes her to swallow when she tells a lie. She adores her mother and hates living on the island after her parents divorced. However, the fleeting friendship between Dal-po and In-ha is disappointed when he learns that In-ha's mother is none other than Song Cha-ok.
Five years later, In-ha and Dal-po are high school students and classmates in their small-town high school. Dal-po, who is actually a genius, pretends to be stupid (like the real Dal-po) and receives zeros in his test results to keep up the deception in front of Choi Gong-pil. Dal-po is friendless at school, while In-ha is the most popular girl. Dal-po secretly likes In-ha, and he is forced to first attend a television quiz show to prevent Ahn Chan Soo, who is in love with In-ha, from confessing to her on national television. In the television studio, he runs into show producer Hwang Gyo-dong, who was a YGN reporter and one of Cha-ok's rivals. After seeing Dal-po on TV, and knowing that her Pinocchio syndrome is limiting her career choices, In-ha decides to become a journalist.
In 2013 the Choi family moved back to the city. In-ha has studied to be a reporter for the last three years after college but keeps failing her job interviews. Dal-po, on the other hand, is forced to work as a taxi driver in order to make ends meet. Cha-ok, who hasn't seen her daughter in a decade and is now the news anchor and department head of MSC, fails her last interview with In-ha, saying a reporter with Pinocchio syndrome is useless. Seeing In-ha hurt by her mother's rejection, Dal-po decides to help her achieve her dream and announces that he wants to become a reporter too. A month later, In-ha and Dal-po apply to YGN's "blind" audition for reporters, but only Dal-po is hired. When confronted with Gyo-dong, the current head of the newsroom at YGN, Dal-po confesses his true identity and his real motive for taking the job: he wants to find his older brother Jae-myung and clarify the name of her father. But what he doesn't know is that Jae-myung was taking revenge on the factory workers who lied about their father by killing two of them and framing the third. Meanwhile, with MSC's credibility rating at an all-time low, Cha-ok is entering In-ha using their Pinocchio Syndrome in a publicity stunt. Dal-po and In-ha become rookies in rival networks, and among their colleagues are Seo Beom-jo, who comes from a rich, protected chaebol background and is connected to In-ha via a fake cell phone number, and Yoon Yoo-rae, once an Idol Sasaeng fan, who now uses these obsessive and determined traits in her new work.
Later in her work, In-ha discovers Choi Dal-po's true identity as Ki Ha-myung and is disgusted by what her mother Cha-ok did to his family during the fire accident. In a lecture given by Cha-ok, In-ha stood up against her, revealing that Jae-myung, his dead brother, is indeed alive. Together they try to get Cha-ok through their honest news while uncovering a larger conspiracy in the news industry.
main characters
Choi Dal-po / Ki Ha-myung
After a misleading report destroyed his family, Ha-myung began a new life as a Dal-po. He hides his intelligence and past memories behind a facade. His feelings for In-ha were always at odds with his hatred of her mother. After years as a taxi driver, he decides to become a reporter at In-ha to prove his family's innocence and show reporter Song Cha-ok what it means to be a true reporter. However, Dal-po soon realizes that a reporter must constantly struggle with the idea of justice and truth in a world where everyone wants to hide the facts for their own interests.
Choi In-ha
In-ha suffers from Pinocchio's Syndrome, where she cannot lie without hiccups. Instead of withdrawing from the world, she believes in telling it as it is. In-ha decides to become a reporter because she thinks it could bring her closer to her mother, Song Cha-ok, who she has always adored. Persistent and strong-willed, In-ha believes that all messages reported must be completely truthful and does everything possible to make it happen. Together with Dal-po, she unravels the truth behind a larger conspiracy and faces her mother in the process. Although In-ha initially treats Dal-po as a family, her growing feelings towards him become undeniable with her hiccups.
Seo Beom-jo
As a young man born with a golden spoon in his mouth, Beom-jo lived a somewhat cheering but contented life until he received texts intended for her mother from a girl named In-ha. Beom-jo became intrigued as the lyrics kept coming over the years and sparked his interest in meeting In-ha. He leaves his job as a fashion magazine editor and decides to join In-ha and become a reporter. On his way to becoming a reporter, Beom-jo quickly discovers the power of the media, choosing between justice and kinship.
