A brush drawing is a drawing that is done exclusively or mainly with the brush . Both paint and ink can be used. The specialty of the brush drawing is that the brush originally intended for painting is used for the technique of drawing.

The tradition of brush drawing originated in East Asia , especially in China and Japan . Since the Tang dynasty in the 6th century, an art of drawing has developed there that can only be classified into the European categories of drawing and painting to a limited extent. Brush drawing represents a connection or interface between drawing and painting and, based on the European enthusiasm for Asian art at the beginning of the 20th century , has found its way into European art, where it continues to play a role today.
