The Pio Point is a headland at the western end of Bird Iceland before the western end of South Georgia . It marks the northern limit of the entrance to Johnson Cove .
British Discovery Investigations scientists made a rough map of the headland between 1926 and 1930. HMS Owen of the Royal Navy carried out further measurements between 1960 and 1961. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named them in 1963. "Pio" is a name that has long been established among seafarers for the sooty albatross ( Latin Phoebetria palpebrata) , whose breeding grounds are Bird Iceland matters.
