The Pipinsburg (also Pippinsburg ) is a former fortification on a mountain spur that protrudes about four kilometers northwest of Osterode am Harz into the valley of the Söse near Förste .

description

The complex is one of the most important prehistoric and early historical fortifications in southern Lower Saxony in the Harz Mountains . The rocky slopes of the spur drop steeply into the valley floor and provide natural protection to the north, west and east. The eastern flank has been torn open by a quarry, which means that important parts of the castle have been lost. The plateau is surrounded by a trench in the shape of a horseshoe, both ends of which open to the Söse.

history

Archaeological finds show that a settlement already existed here during the early Bronze Age . It is believed that the people who were buried in the Lichtenstein Cave, three kilometers away, lived here during the late Bronze Age .

The medieval castle was first mentioned in 1134 and destroyed in 1365. Another mention, which is rather improbable, dates to the year 1134 and mentions knight Werner von Berckefeldt , who lives on the Pipinsburg and was a castellan in Windhausen . The noble family of the Lords of Berckefeldt therefore considered both the Windhausen Castle and the Pipinsburg as their property. Documented military and trade routes are in the vicinity of the Pipinsburg. The Harzrandstrasse, the "via regia" or "Thüringer Strasse" runs through Nordhausen, Scharzfeld and Osterode in the direction of Seesen-Hildesheim. In Osterode it crossed the " old Harzstrasse ", which led from Northeim via the Upper Harz to Goslar. Until the year 1843 the Osterode office moved in on and next to the castle of the Rottzehnt, the corresponding catchment area was then called Burggrund .
