Piraten in Batavia is a water dark ride in Europa-Park in Rust . The facility of the manufacturer Mack Rides , which is owned by the owners of Europa-Park, was built in 1987, destroyed by a major fire in May 2018 and reopened in July 2020.

The attraction is located in a hall between the Dutch and Scandinavian themed areas of Europa-Park, the facade of which is in the typical Dutch clinker building style or in the style of Scandinavian wooden houses, corresponding to the theme area . The front of the building towards the Dutch themed area houses not only the entrance to the attraction but also shops and restaurants, as well as the entrance and exit of the musical theater.

In some aspects of the ride, there were similarities to the different versions of Pirates of the Caribbean from the Disney parks.

Theming

The history of the attraction took place in the 17th century, at the time of the Dutch colonization of what is now Indonesia , which was called the Dutch East Indies until 1949 . The themed trip was named after the capital Jakarta , which was called Batavia until 1942 . The main focus of the attraction was on the raid of pirates in the city.

journey

When entering the building, you walked under a large banner with "Pirates in Batavia" written in gold letters. A black flag with a white skull symbol, also known as Jolly Roger, hung over this banner .

The attraction's train station was on the first floor of the building. You got there via a gently sloping ramp that was decorated with various scenes. In this area, the pre-show, the story of the themed ride was set up. Here the visitor learned that the Dutch had colonies in what was then the Dutch East Indies in the 17th and 18th centuries. On the back wall of the scenery there were murals showing, for example, islands of the Java Sea, such as Sumatra , Java and Borneo .

On the first floor of the building, the guest then entered the train station, where the 16-person boats were boarded. There was a first scene that showed a section of a cave in the Indonesian jungle that was populated by various animals and people.

After leaving the train station, you drove a large arc that ended with the end of the cave and the descent of a waterfall. The boats then went through a battle scene. On the left side of the route was a large pirate ship attacking the Dutch fort on the right. The scene was dominated by the roar of cannons and the battle cries of the pirates.

Through an opening in the fort wall one reached the city of Batavia, which is haunted by the looting pirates. In many small scenes it was told how the pirates win over the local women, satisfy their hunger with exotic animals and get drunk. The trip led past a temple hidden in the jungle, the burning city, a fishing village and a prison.

In the end, the boats passed a show stage embedded in the middle of the scenery and the Bamboe Baai restaurant opposite, before reaching the exit through an archway.

Destruction by major fire

On the evening of May 26, 2018, a fire broke out near the amusement park , which eventually developed into a major fire (see Europa-Park # Major Fire on May 26, 2018 ) and spread to the amusement park and other neighboring buildings and attractions. Despite the intervention of the fire brigade, the ride was completely destroyed. Visitors were not harmed. A few days after the fire, the park operator announced that new concepts for the future design of the area would be developed in the following weeks and that it had not yet been decided whether "Pirates in Batavia" would be rebuilt or whether something new would be created here. However, it is certain that a one-to-one replica is not possible. Shortly after the fire, a petition was launched online calling for the attraction to be rebuilt.

On June 6th, 2018 Michael Mack announced during a conversation at SWR Live in Freiburg that the "Pirates in Batavia" will be returning. He did not give any details. It is now planned to restore the attraction in the design of the original using modern technology by the 2020 winter season. The newly established pirates in Batavia are to be opened on July 28, 2020.

A warehouse near the attraction was initially assumed to be the location of the fire. On June 6, 2018, the Offenburg police headquarters finally announced that, according to the current status of the investigation, the fire was due to a technical defect in the fjord rafting area. However, the evaluation is not yet complete.
