Pires Constantino (born October 20, 1929 in Rio de Janeiro , † 2002 ) was a Brazilian football player .

Career

The variable offensive player Constantino began his career at the Brazilian club Fluminense FC in his hometown of Rio de Janeiro, for which he ran from 1945 to 1949; then he wore the jersey of city rival CR Vasco da Gama . In 1951 he left his home country and moved to France, where he was signed by the first division club Olympique Nîmes . The 175-meter-tall footballer became a regular player in the top French league and was also successful as a goalscorer with nine and ten goals respectively in his first two seasons.

In 1955 it was with Olympique Marseille a league competitor who poached the Brazilian and also made it a regular player. With Marseille he came close to a championship title, but in the end achieved a slightly better position with fifth place than before in Nîmes. In addition, Marseille was only a stopover, as he moved to Olympique Lyon in 1956 and thus found the third employer in France's highest league, which also carried the name Olympique. First he had to fight for his place on the team and also suffer mediocre results; the team increased as well as the player who scored ten times during the 1958/59 season. He also made his debut in European competition when he played two matches in the Messestädte Cup .

In 1959, Constantino decided to return to Olympique Nîmes, where he received a place in the first team and reached the runner-up with the team in 1960. Even after that, the club remained successful and made it into the national cup final in 1961 ; Constantino was on the field, but could not avert a 3-0 defeat against the UA Sedan-Torcy and thus missed the chance for a national title. During the 1962/63 season, the Brazilian was increasingly pushed out of the team and at the end of the season, after 320 games and 63 goals, said goodbye to the first class. He signed with the US Marignane , with whom he made promotion to the second division in 1965. In 1966 there was direct relegation and at the same time the end of his career for the then 36-year-old Constantino.
