Life

Pirkko Saisio comes from a communist family home, but also taught her Christian values to the extent that she wanted to study theology after graduating from high school in 1967 , but that at that time in Finland would not have been easy as a woman. After a few detours, she initially took acting lessons in 1971 and had her first engagement in 1975 at the Rovaniemi City Theater , but at the same time began to write. She made her debut in 1975 with the novel Elämänmeno , in which Helsinki describes the working class from the perspective of a young woman. She later remained attached to this complex of issues - women in a conflict-ridden urban environment. Her writing activity is also examined from the point of view of the visual arts : her novels are often determined by certain techniques that are used in theater, such as the dominance of dialogues or the direct confrontation of the protagonists . A typical example here is the theater novel Kainin tytär from 1984, in which Anna falls in love with her piano teacher.

She wrote “Tunnottomuus” (“Callousness”) for the stage, which was premiered at the Finnish National Theater in 2003 , and directed it herself. The play was very well received by the critics and in 2004 was the Finnish contribution to the “Nordic Drama Prize”.

Pirkko Saisio is married to the actor Harri Hyttinen, who is three years his junior . Their daughter Elsa is also an actress.
