Pismis 24 is an open star cluster in the emission nebula NGC 6357 , in the constellation Scorpio . Its name is derived from the astronomer Paris Pişmiş , who discovered the star cluster in 1959 on recordings from the Tonantzintla observatory (near Puebla ). He is young by astronomical standards.

Pismis 24 contains, among other things, the object Pismis 24-1 , also called HDE 319718A or LSS 4142A (spectral class: O3, age: 5.86 million years, absolute brightness: −11.8), which has a mass of 200 to 300 solar masses for some time was considered the heaviest known star . However, recordings with the Hubble Space Telescope revealed that it is a binary star . It may even be a triple system. Despite this resolution into two single stars, the two O stars with a mass of 70 to 100 solar masses are among the heaviest stars known in the Milky Way .

With Pismis 24-17 , also known as HDE 319718B, another specimen with about 100 solar masses belongs to this very rare star class.
