Piso (counter-emperor)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Piso Frugi († 261 ) was a Roman counter-emperor.

Piso probably came from the gens Calpurnia . He supported the usurpation of the Macriani against the rightful emperor Gallienus and was therefore sent by Macrianus Maior to fight the governor of the province of Achaea , Valens Thessalonicus , who remained loyal to Gallienus . After the soldiers of Valens proclaimed him emperor, Piso also assumed the title of emperor. However, he was killed shortly afterwards by his opponent's troops.

The events around Piso and Valens Thessalonicus are difficult to reconstruct. The only available source is the Historia Augusta , which is generally regarded as unreliable . It is possible that the elevation of the Piso was simply invented by the author of the Historia Augusta, the only thing that can be certain is that Achaea was affected by the conflict between Gallienus and the Macriani.
