Pit Heltmann

Pit Heltmann is a German diplomat . He has been Ambassador to North Korea since July 2018 .

Life

After graduating from high school , Pit Heltmann first trained as a banker and then studied geography and Japanese studies at the University of Bonn .

In 1988 Heltmann joined the Foreign Service . In the course of his diplomatic career he was mainly active in Asia , including as Deputy Ambassador to Mongolia (1994-1998), Head of the Trade Promotion Agency in China (2000-2004), Deputy Head of the Embassy in Manila and Head of political department at the Tokyo embassy .

In the Federal Foreign Office, he was deputy head of the department for bilateral cultural relations with America, Africa and Asia.

From 2014 to 2018 Heltmann was head of the department for foreign, security and development policy in the Federal Press Office .

In July 2018, Heltmann was appointed ambassador to North Korea .
