The Pitcairn English ( "Pitkern" or "Pitcairnesisch") is an on the island of Pitcairn existent Creole language based on a dialect of English of the 18th century and the Tahitian based this era.

The (almost) same language is also spoken by the Pitcairners who were resettled on the Norfolk Island in 1856 , the Norfolk , there under the name "Norfuk" or "Norfolk" .

The language code according to ISO 639-3 is pih .

History of language

After the mutiny on the Bounty , the mutineers sailed to Tahiti , where some of them left the ship (and were later captured). The rest, under the leadership of Fletcher Christian , sailed away together with several Polynesians and finally settled on Pitcairn in the South Pacific .

Since the team of the Bounty did not understand Tahitian, but the population of Tahiti hardly understood English, a pidgin , "Pitcairn-English", today Pitkern , developed as a communication level (if at all) from this point onwards was virtually independent of English.
