Pithoragarh is a small town in the Indian state of Uttarakhand .
The city is the capital of the Pithoragarh district . Pithoragarh has the status of a Nagar Palika Parishad . The city is divided into 15 wards . On the cut-off date of the 2011 census it had a total of 56,044 inhabitants, of which 29,127 were men and 26,917 were women. Hindus form the largest group of the city's population with a share of around 93%, followed by Muslims with around 5%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 92.48%.
The city is connected to the rest of the country by roads and a small airport.
